Shadow Lakes - Local Development
The Coboconk Solar Farm
The Coboconk Solar Farm is expected to be
situated on the Northline Rd. towards Fenelon Falls just past the Burnt
River turn off. Ward 3 Councillor David Hodgson told the CKL council
meeting "solar power is very innocuous. It's not going to harm anybody."
He added it would have no negative environmental impact on the proposed
tract of land as it is basically limestone rock with a foot of soil over
it.
The Coboconk Integrated Cardiac
Health & Wellness Centre
Located just west of Coboconk on French Settlement Road, the plans for
this 600+ acres include the Wellness Centre , a surrounding series of
pockets of chalets forming a community of 350 homes for private
ownership, a therapeutic Horse Ranch, a 100 acre nature sanctuary, a 100
acre solar farm built above a 100 acre Pennycress farm for bio-diesel
production as well as a B&B/Learning Center for Green Technologies. The
really exciting part is the entire project will be self sustaining with
enough hydro produced to sell back to the grid.
The technology they use for sewage would allow the user to drink the
finished product. Although not recommended as a selling feature, this
does fit in nicely with Sir Sanford Fleming College's pursuit of
excellence in the area of Waste Water.
The proponents have met with CKL, most neighbours, as well as people
from Balsam Lake, where any effluent would ultimately end up, and will
be starting the zoning and approvals process in the near future.
The Norland Dam Hydropower
Development
Project
Proposed to begin construction in early
2011, the Norland Dam is being retrofitted with a Canadian designed and
built power-generating Very Low Head Turbine (VLHT) that will generate
enough electricity to meet the annual energy needs of over 400 homes. A
presentation given to attendees of the Shadow Lakes Association Inc
Annual General Meeting on July 10 2010 by Timber Run Hydropower
Corporation explained the whole process. Click

presentation.
Coboconk Beach
Project ("Kids Back in the Water")
The Coboconk Lions Club is spearheading the
improvement of water quality at the Lions Park Beach in
Coboconk to get the "Kids Back in the Water".
The strategy includes a Goose Control component,
increasing water flow past the park area, and installing
a spray fountain in the water at the beach. The Lions
Club needs your help if this project is to become a
reality. If you can assist with this project or would
like to make a donation to get the "Kids Back in the
Water", please contact Sharon Yeo at 454-9531.
Please don't feed the geese or wildlife at the beach to
help improve the water quality.
Environmental Lake Management Plans in CKL
Following on the heels of an environmental management plan for
Lake Scugog, Sturgeon Lake has a management plan as of October 2010. It
is a first for the City of Kawartha Lakes, with plans for Cameron and
Balsam Lakes expected next year.
